History was made on the 27th of May, 2022(Children's Day) as Smileandshine Children's Foundation held a conference for children aged 10 to 18 years, tagged STRIVE CONFERENCE with the theme; Creating a Better Future for the Nigerian Child at the Afe Babalola Hall, Unilag Auditorium.
The special guest of honor, Her Excellency, Dr (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu who was ably represented by Mrs Edith Egube, wife of the commissioner for budget and economic planning, Lagos State, commended Dr Nimi Ekere, the founder of Smile and Shine Children's Foundation and convener of the event, emphasising that she as well as the lagos state government were proud of her efforts in ensuring that children are safe from all forms of abuse, especially child sexual abuse.
Kelvin Donnelly, a seasoned and distinguished educationist and principal of the British international school, Lagos State was the Keynote speaker. He spoke on safeguarding and child protection in schools.
The guest speakers at the occasion were Pastor Laurie Idahosa represented by Pastor Toyin Ubamadu, Dr oluwajimi Sodipo, Barr. Temi Okeowo and a host of other notable speakers.
The event had the guest speakers talk to the children on important issues like moral values and etiquettes, mindset re-orientation, character building and improvement, purpose discovery, safeguarding and child protection and cybersafety and security.
There also was a variety of activities like drama, poetry, music and dance by various schools.
The event was aimed at addressing the ills and menaces that the children are faced with and how they can navigate this period and become better versions of themselves.
There was a question and answer session where children asked questions and also gave their opinions about how they felt things could be done differently in the society.
It was indeed an amazing and wonderful event.
