In its continuous improvement and delivery of excellent healthcare services, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has again, aced its counterparts in the provision of health solutions.
The hospital led by the visionary Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, recently performed life saving Electrophysiology (EP) Ablation procedures.This medical accomplishment happened between Friday, 28th of September and Tuesday, 3rd of October, 2023, at the hospital's Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
This feat was achieved in collaboration with the Cardiovascular Foundation Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to the goal of promoting cardiovascular education, research and patient care in underserved communities.
Dr. Oluwaseye Oladimeji, who is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist in LASUTH, described the Electrophysiology Ablation as one "performed to evaluate and treat cardiac arrhythmias, or abnormal heart rhythms. Abnormal heart rhythms can occur in children and adults with or without congenital heart disease."
The Consultant Cardiologist revealed that, out of 10 patients that were screened for the procedure, five were found suitable for the treatment which was carried out at the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory of the hospital. He explained that the procedures were done with the support of the Foundation, who brought in some medical supplies to cushion the cost of treatment for the patients. He also said that the Foundation came with some experts to assist the hospital in the area of skills transfer.
Dr. Ijeoma Ekeruo, a Cardiac Electrophysiologist, representing the Cardiovascular Education Foundation, further explained the procedure as a "process done to diagnose an abnormal heart rhythm problem and it also indicates whether a catheter ablation can treat the problem."
Twenty-Seven year old Oluremi Damilare, one of the beneficiaries of this procedure, said, "since I had this ablation done on Friday, 28th of September, 2023, I feel like a new person. I have been dealing with this heart issue since I was a child, now I can do things that I could not do before." He extended his appreciation to Dr. Oladimeji and his team and also the entire management of the hospital.
Since the inception Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in 2022, LASUTH has carried out different ranges of procedures and Electrophysiology Ablation is one of them. So far, more than 200 procedures have been successfully performed.
