In preparation for the forthcoming Kogi State gubernatorial election, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar (GCON), the vice president of the country (1999-2007) and the National Leader of the Opposition PDP led the party team to storm Kogi State in solidarity with Senator Dino Melaye who is vying for the state's governorship seat.
Other dignitaries present at the occasion include Amb. Umar Iliya Damagun, the PDP Acting National Chairman, Senator Aminu Tambuwal, the former governor of Sokoto State, Prince Uche Secondus, the former national chairman of the party, Capt. Idris Wada, former Kogi State governor, Senator Abdul Ningi, Boni Haruna, Capt. Umar Bature, the PDP national organizing secretary among others.
Speaking at the occasion Atiku who also holds the traditional title of the Waziri Adamawa urged the people of Kogi to vote for the PDP and to defend their votes afterward.
He noted that Dino Melaye has the right attributes of a leader. "He is committed, courageous, dedicated, and patriotic," Atiku stated. He was optimistic that the PDP would be victorious in the election despite the unorthodox tactics of the APC government in the State to frustrate the opposition by booking all the hotels in the state capital and denying the opposition the use of the state stadium that was built by the PDP administration.
Atiku recalled that such unwholesome tactics did not stop the PDP from winning the last Osun State gubernatorial election.
Speaking after receiving the flag from the party's acting chairman, Dino Melaye promised to govern the state with the fear of God if elected. He also promised to reinstate all sacked civil servants in the state and to grant local government autonomy. He further promised to transform the state, harness its tourism potentials and to keep his campaign promises.
Other members of the the party's hierarchy who spoke on the occasion urged the Kogi State electorates to vote for the PDP; for Dino Melaye the party's candidate is the most qualified among others vying for the position and because the previous administration in the state by the PDP was better than the current APC rule..."
