March Movie Madness: Top Movies Produced by Women Premiering this Month.

In recent years, Nollywood has slowly but surely evolved into a place where women take more active roles in film production. We now have more women producers and directors than ever before, and the number keeps growing. Names like Mo Abudu, Tope Oshin, Mildred Okwo, Jade Osiberu, Funke Akindele, Chinenye Chichi Nworah are Nollywood household names who have produced and directed box office movies.

When Africa Magic announced the addition of over 300 new movies to the lineup of programmes, they not only offered customers more entertainment but also gave movies produced and directed by women a platform to shine. Here’s a spotlight on some of our favourite movies produced or directed by women in the March line up.

 

The Counsellor

This movie is positively amazing. It’s a powerful story of self-discovery and redemption. Directed by Sonia Uche, the movie tells the story of a marriage counselor played by Eucharia Anunobi, who becomes involved in her son's affairs by dictating his every move. She finds love and starts to question her morality. The Counsellor premieres on the 15th of March on Africa Magic Showcase (Ch. 151 on DStv). Sonia Uche is an actress, filmmaker, and entrepreneur with over 20 movies to her credit.

 

Away from Home

This relatable and educative movie focuses on the stigmatisation of prostitution and was produced by Chinenye Nora Obasi. Our hero, a devout Christian and choir leader, must defy the provisions and doctrines of his church and also risk losing his marriage to save his childhood friend who has succumbed to life's frustration and embraced prostitution as a means of livelihood. Away from home will air on the 11th of March on Africa Magic Showcase (Ch. 151 on DStv)

Chinenye Obasi is a multitalented administrator, customer service professional, author, and film producer, and is the Administrative Head of Film at Impact Foundations.

 

Talking Stage

"The Boy is Mine" is the storyline of this movie. Talking Stage tells the intimate details of what happens when you have two best friends, one charming man, and a romantic collision of hearts. Produced by Diana Childs, the movie is entertaining as it is educative, mirroring the realities of friendship tested by romance. Catch this movie on the 18th of March on Africa Magic Showcase (Ch. 151 on DStv). Diana Childs is a Producer, Actress, Writer, Filmmaker, and the CEO of DC Productions.

 

Birthing Pain

This movie dissects the trauma of uncertainty and an unfaithful partner. It becomes worse when our heroine on her way to divorcing her unfaithful husband finds out she is pregnant. Produced by Chineye Love Eze, Birthing Pain educates, entertains, and answers some of life’s questions. This movie airs on the 31st of March on Africa Magic Urban (DStv Ch. 153 and GOtv SUPA Ch. 8). Chineye Love is a young filmmaker who made her debut in 2013 with the award-winning Pan-African Movie "The Cartel" and has over 20 movies under her belt.

 

Sanko Republic

This movie premiered seasons 1 and 2 and is a mix of comedy, action, and drama produced by Destiny Etiko. It tells various stories of a group of people who try to get jobs as police officers but fail. With the help of their landlord who happens to be a police officer, they acquire police uniforms and set about harassing and extorting road users. This movie will premiere on Africa Magic Epic (DStv Ch. 152 and GOtv Ch. 6). on the 31st of March. Destiny Etiko is an award-winning actress and producer with over 120 movies to her credit.
