The prevailing sentiment across Nigeria today is one of widespread hunger, a reality underscored by skyrocketing prices of essential commodities. In recent days, the cost of living has surged beyond the reach of the average citizen. For instance, a medium-sized tuber of yam now costs an astonishing 6,000 naira, while the price of beans has reached unprecedented levels. Even with a slight drop in the prices of pepper and tomatoes, they remain unaffordable for many.
This escalating cost of living has sparked widespread frustration and anger, with citizens increasingly vocal in their criticism of the federal government. The discontent has set the stage for two nationwide protests: one in support of the government and the other against it. However, the motivations behind these protests appear tenuous. There are lingering questions about whether there are substantial reasons to either support or oppose the current administration.
What remains undisputed is the pressing need for good governance, an improved standard of living, and equal opportunities for all Nigerians. The focus should shift to holding local leaders accountable—from department heads and ward councilors to constituency representatives and district senators. True change, it is argued, will only come when immediate leaders are held responsible for their actions.
In the end, regardless of whether one chooses to protest, the underlying issues will persist until there is a concerted effort to address the systemic flaws at the local level.
