The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has relieved Commissioner of Police Akin Fakorede of his duties as the head of the IGP Monitoring Unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Soccer
However, recent developments within the Nigerian Police Force have resulted in his removal from the strategic position.
Reports indicate that Deputy Commissioner of Police Aliyu Abubakar has now been deployed to take over leadership of the monitoring unit following Fakorede’s redeployment.
Fakorede’s appointment had previously sparked controversy due to allegations connected to his tenure as the head of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Civil society organisations had reportedly expressed concerns over accusations of brutality, extrajudicial killings, and alleged interference in electoral processes during his time with the unit.
Further reports also linked Fakorede to a dispute involving investors at River Park Estate in Abuja. Under his leadership, the IGP Monitoring Unit was accused of confronting journalists and workers who staged protests at the estate in January 2026.
It was also reported that in September 2025, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, publicly criticised Fakorede over allegations of police brutality and claims of involvement in election-related interference.
Fakorede’s removal comes as the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, continues to implement internal restructuring and administrative changes within the Nigeria Police Force as part of efforts to reposition the institution.
