OGUN 2027: Tension Mounts Over Hunye–Yayi Legal Battle as Calls Grow for Judicial Independence

Tension is reportedly mounting around the 2027 Ogun State governorship contest as concerns emerge over alleged political manoeuvring surrounding the unresolved legal battle between Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, and Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye.

At the heart of the growing controversy is the need to ensure that the legal dispute challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary is allowed to run its full course without political pressure, executive influence or interference from powerful individuals.

The unfolding developments have raised questions about the growing involvement of influential political figures outside Ogun State and whether the confidence surrounding Adeola's governorship ambition is being shaped by political assurances beyond the electoral process.

There are also concerns following reports of a private meeting in which Adeola was allegedly asked about his legal dispute with Hunye and reportedly responded that the matter had been settled.

That reported response has generated further questions because Hunye has not publicly agreed to any settlement or announced an intention to withdraw his court action.

Rather, Hunye has maintained his position that the Federal High Court should determine the dispute, which challenges the process through which Adeola emerged as the APC's purported governorship candidate.

The case also involves allegations relating to perjury, which remain subject to appropriate judicial determination.

For observers familiar with the dispute, the suggestion that the matter has been settled, when one of the principal parties has not publicly acknowledged any such agreement, raises legitimate questions that deserve clarification.

More importantly, it reinforces the need to allow the judiciary to determine the issues before it strictly on their legal merits.

NATIONAL POLITICAL FIGURES AND THE OGUN CONNECTION

The controversy is unfolding against the background of growing political conversations about the influence of national figures in the Ogun 2027 governorship contest.

One prominent figure associated with Adeola's ambition is Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who has publicly canvassed support for the Ogun West senator.

At an Ogun West Professionals for Yayi media engagement in Ilaro in February 2026, Bamidele reportedly urged stakeholders to unite behind the aspiration of Ogun West to produce the next governor of the state.

His intervention has since become part of broader political discussions about the interests and calculations of influential political actors beyond Ogun.

There are allegations in political circles that the Bamidele-Adeola relationship could have wider strategic implications, particularly concerning future political configurations in Ekiti and Ogun states.

Some have speculated that the alliance may intersect with the future political ambitions of influential actors in both states. However, there is no established evidence that Bamidele's support for Adeola is part of an arrangement to advance a personal governorship ambition in Ekiti.

Another influential name being mentioned in the political conversations is Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Although the extent of his involvement in the Ogun political equation remains unclear, his name has featured in discussions about the possible influence of powerful political interests around the Presidency.

There are also allegations that Adeola may have received assurances from influential individuals about the possible outcome of his legal battle, alongside claims of discussions over potential political appointments should he successfully navigate the litigation.

These allegations have not been independently substantiated. Those concerned should be given the opportunity to clarify their positions.

THE JUDICIARY MUST NOT BE DRAWN INTO POLITICAL CALCULATIONS

Whatever political alliances exist, the legal dispute between Hunye and Adeola must remain a matter for the courts.

No political office, individual or network of influence should be permitted to dictate the outcome of judicial proceedings or create the impression that court decisions can be negotiated outside the courtroom.

Hunye's decision to seek judicial intervention is a legitimate recourse available to a party who believes his political rights and the party's established procedures have been violated.

The appropriate response is not political intimidation, back-channel negotiations or attempts to influence public perception of the likely judgment. It is respect for due process.

The Ogun 2027 governorship contest should not become a test of who commands the greatest political influence in Abuja. It should be a test of democratic credibility, internal party democracy and respect for the rule of law.

The judiciary must be allowed to perform its constitutional responsibility independently, without interference, intimidation or pressure from any quarter.

Ultimately, the credibility of the APC, the integrity of the electoral process and public confidence in Nigeria's democracy are at stake.

The message should be clear: No political alliance is superior to the Constitution. No individual is above the law. And no governorship ambition should be pursued at the expense of judicial independence.

In Ogun State, the demand is simple: let the rule of law prevail, let justice take its course and let the courts decide without interference.
