Collaboration with OPC Has Reduced Crime Rate in South-West - IGP

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has revealed that his collaboration with the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has led to a significant reduction in crime rate in South-West Nigeria.

The IGP, who made the revelation through a delegation sent to the Aare Ona Kankanfo of Yorubaland and Leader of the OPC, Iba Gani Adams, in Lagos on Thursday, said that he would sustain the synergy and partnership with the OPC to further reduce crime rate and ensure peace in the southwest area.

Rising from a meeting with the delegation, the Aare Ona Kankanfo commended the initiative of the IGP to partner with his organisation to fight crime, as he pledged that the OPC will not betray the course.

Adams noted that the most important part of security is intelligence gathering, as he recalled how the police in Lagos were able to end the menace of the dreaded Badoo cultists involved in several killings in the state by forming a partnership with the OPC.

He also noted that the OPC was not set up as a crime-fighting organisation as he revealed the circumstances that led to its involvement in security matters when landlord associations sought its assistance to stem the tide of rising crimes.

He reflected on the confrontations between the OPC and the police between 2000 and 2004, and expressed joy that today the IGP has found the organisation worthy of his collaboration in crime fighting.

Commending the IGP for believing in community policing and taking pro-active steps, Adams said that the OPC would work with the newly established police special squad to be deployed to the southwest, as his men who know the territory well are ready, willing, and able to confront criminals in the region.

Leader of the IGP’s delegation, Mr Jude Nwankor, assured Aare Ona Kankanfo that the mistake of the past would not repeat itself again.

Members of the delegation included the Officer in Charge of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Lagos, CSP Peter Gana and the Commander, Seme Border Patrol, CSP Ogechi Moses Udu.

Also at the parley on the side of Iba Adams were the former Special Adviser, Political, to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Basorun Akin Osuntokun; OPC’s Director of Mobilisation, Comrade Dauda Asikolaye; Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo; Osi Aare Ona Kakanfo, Gani Kola Balogun; Mr. Segun Sani; and key members of the OPC.

Four Police Officers Arrested for Extra Judicial killings….To face Murder Charges

CZ:5650/LS/PPRO /VOL. 3/27
21st August, 2019

Attention of Lagos State Police Command was drawn to a video on social media showing some Police Officers shooting two unarmed suspects who were arrested and already in their custody against the code of professional conduct and laws guiding how suspects in Police custody should be treated. The Policemen were identified as Inspector Fabiyi Omomayara, Sergeant Olaniyi Solomon,  Sergeant Solomon Sunday and Corporal Aliyu Mukaila  attached to Iba Division Patrol team. The incident happened on 19/8/2019 at about 3.00pm, when Iba Police Station received a distress call  from one Anugu Valentine 'm' of no 250 Agege  motor road Mushin, that he was attacked by a group of armed men  numbering about four  on two  motorcycles at Ipayi area, Iba and they dispossessed him of one iPhone  max valued at #450: 000.   Acting on the information, the Divisional Police Officer Iba promptly deployed the Divisional Patrol team to the scene. Two of the armed robbers were arrested while two escaped. Two locally made pistols  with six life cartridges and five  expended cartridges were recovered. The gang is said to be notorious for series of robberies in Iba and environs. It was a well celebrated operation by the team as the suspects were gallantly arrested. The team however, went extreme by killing the suspects who were already in their custody instead of taking them to the Police Station and allowing the normal process of investigation and prosecution to be initiated as stipulated under procedural laws. That act of extra judicial killings falls short of police professional standards and cannot be condoned by the Command. The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu mni has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. The Police Officers are currently subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings known as Orderly Room trial and if found culpable, they will be dismissed from the Force and will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department Yaba for prosecution in the conventional Court. Members of the Public will be updated on the outcome of the investigation and trial.

Release Sowore now, Adams urges FG

Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige, has joined other eminent Nigerians, to call for the release of the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (ACC), Omoyele Sowore, saying such arrest portends grave danger for Nigeria's democracy.

The publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria was arrested by the police from the Department of State Services (DSS) over a planned revolutionary protest scheduled for Monday, August 5.

The Police had alleged the activist  of a plot to  force a regime change in the country.

Reacting in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Aderemi, Adams said the arrest was a huge abuse of human right to freedom, stating that the planned revolutionary protest cannot be said to be treasonable  since it was yet to be implemented  before  he was arrested by the DSS.

Adams, faulted the rationale behind the arrest, saying it is unfortunate that Nigerians usually forget events and memories of the past.

He noted further that Nigeria's  problems emanate from  the military's dictatorship and tendency  to gag the press and prevent freedom of  speech and expression.

Aare Onakakanfo, however, said with the information at his disposal,  the convener  did not consult many of the civic society groups.

The planned protest,he admitted, would have presented to Nigerians, the needed opportunity to express their feelings to president Muhammadu Buhari.

Frowning at the arrest, Adams  noted that Nigerians are entitled to express their feelings, in as much as the protest is peaceful, and violent - free and it also represents the feelings of Nigerians.

" Not everybody can have access to the presidency in Abuja. This is democracy, not  militarism, where people are cowed and jailed over issues relating to their welfare"

"Sowore is an activist, and he was part of the struggle for this democracy. Therefore, he is entitled to express his feelings and that of  Nigerians in a democratic setting" .

" I think the FG must consider his freedom as a panacea for peace. For instance, I wonder how a peaceful protest by armless citizens will now turn to a treasonable felony.

" It is unfortunate that many of the people at the corridors of power today were part of the protests against former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, but today the situation has changed,"

" I am afraid they wanted to draw the nation backward to those years of the military, where  peoples rights to freedom and other  fundamental human rights were  alien to the military"

" Even in countries that have  good institutions and good welfare policies, the citizens still organise peaceful protest and the government will surely listen to them"

" As an activist and promoter of peace, I have engaged in various rallies and protests. On each occasions, we consulted widely, taking into considerations so many factors, including  the rights of Nigerians to embark on protest, noting also that such rights should not translate to a violent or forceful protest"

"Nigeria is a democratic republic, therefore, unlawful detention of a people can lead to further crisis and the Federal Government must try as much as it is possible to avoid this by listening to the cries of  Nigerians".

The Federal Government must free Sowore and formulate policy programmes that have direct impact on the mass of the people" The Aare Onakakanfo  said.
