AARE GANI ADAMS PAYS HOMAGE TO OONI OGUNWUSI AS ODUDUWA FESTIVAL HOLDS IN ILE-IFE.

The Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adam on Thursday paid homage to the Arole Oodua & Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, as he led other descendants of Oduduwa in the celebration of the annual Oduduwa Festival.

In his words, Aare Adam described the Ooni as the only monarch with the seal of Oduduwa, expressing that he holds the foremost African traditional ruler in a very high esteem as his father.

"As the Arole Oduduwa, all descendants of Oduduwa must bow in respect for the highly respected throne because he is the father of all. I respect him so much because he is my father and I will continue to do so." Gani Adam explained.

While acknowledging the Ooni for his relentless efforts towards uniting the descendants of Oduduwa, Aare Adam expressed his joy over what he described an improved level of unity in Yorubaland which he said was fully displayed in the formation of the South-West Security Network, also known as Operation Amotekun recently.

"Let me commend Kabiesi, the Oonirisa, the Alaafin of Oyo and other prominent Obas, leaders of socio cultural organizations, civil society groups and individuals for supporting the crusade for Operation Amotekun.

"The events that played out during the crusade for Operation Amotekun clearly indicated  that the Oduduwa blood truly flow in our veins.

"When the issue of Amotekun came up, I made my position known to the world, without minding whose ox is gored. I said it clearly, that whoever that is against the initiative was an enemy of our race.

"It shows that in unity, everything is possible. So I am using this opportunity to appeal to all the state legislatures to do the needful by legislating the initiative giving it the necessary legal backing. When this is done, we can be sure of winning the war for a better future." Gani Adam noted.

While addressing the cheering crowd, Ooni Ogunwusi who is the natural head of the entire House of Oduduwa worldwide described the descendants of Oduduwa a section of which is called Yoruba as uniquely different people created by the Most High God.

"Take a close look at our people, their conducts and lifestyle anywhere in the world, you will agree with me that we are uniquely different. No matter where we find ourselves, we are pace setters and that is the value we must continue to uphold.

"What we need to add to our uniqueness is love, let us love ourselves and others in order to record more wins. I am confident that if we live in love and unity, we will soar above whatever challenges that may confront us.

"I hail the courage of Aare Ganiyu Adam for his commitment especially in terms of resources to ensure the consistent celebration of Oduduwa festival annually. May God continue to bless him and other members of the Oodua People's Congress, Oodua Progressive Union, as well as all descendants of Oduduwa across the world." The Ooni noted.

SENATE PROBES NNPC OVER $396M SPENT ON REFINERIES’ MAINTENANCE

The Senate on Thursday resolved to probe the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) over the sum of $396 million expended on Turn-Around Maintenance of refineries in the country between 2013 and 2015.
Accordingly, the Upper Chamber mandated the Committee on Petroleum Downstream, Upstream and Gas to carry out a holistic investigation on the Turn-Around Maintenance expenditures and the current state of the refineries as well as convoke a stakeholders conference with the aim of finding ways to revamp them.
The decision to investigate spendings on maintenance of refineries by the Corporation was reached after consideration of a motion brought to the floor by Senator Yusuf A. Yusuf (APC, Taraba Central).
The lawmaker noted that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has four refineries: two in Port-Harcourt (PHRC) and one each in Kaduna (KRPC) and Warri (WRPC).
According to him, the refineries were established to adequately supply and serve needs for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO), High Pour Fuel Oil (HPFO) and Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) for both local consumption and exports.
He recalled, “The country through NNPC has in the past 25 years spent Billion of US dollars in Turn-Around Maintenance of the refineries, the latest being over $396 million spent between 2013 and 2015 without meaningful result.”
The lawmaker lamented that “the refineries have remained in moribund state in the last 15-20 years and is almost reaching total collapse due to lack of proposer maintenance of the facilities with a poor average capacity utilization hovering between fifteen percent and twenty-five percent per annum.”
Senator Yusuf said “despite the huge spending on turn-around Maintenance of refineries, NNPC recently announced a cumulative loss of N123.25 billion in 10 months (January to October, 2019), putting the total revenue of facilities at N68.82 billion, while total expenses incurred was N192.1 billion within the same period.”
He warned that “such huge wastage and slippages amidst the nation’s tight economy, if not addressed, may lead the country back to recession.”
The lawmaker added that such losses, when averted and combined with the huge expenditures in “under recovery” on fuel pump price and properly channeled into full rehabilitation and construction of modern refineries, would positively impact on the economy and save the country from the embarrassment of importation of petroleum products and its ripple effect

GOV SANWOOLU SWEARS IN BOLANLE BADA AS NEW CHAIRMAN OF IKOSI-ISHERI LCDA

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday charged Local Government administrators to collaborate more with the State Government to deliver democratic dividends to the residents, adding that there must be a synergy between the two arms of Government for his administration to achieve its vision of a Greater Lagos.
The Governor stated this during the swearing in ceremony of the new Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, Princess Sammy Abolanle Bada, at the Lagos House in Ikeja.
The Governor said all the infrastructural projects being executed by the current administration fall within the jurisdiction of one Local Government or the other thereby spreading the development across the State.
He added that there is the need to deliver democratic dividends to people at the grassroots hence the importance of a sound relationship between the two tiers of government.
He said: ‘‘to ensure maximum effect and optimum delivery of dividends of democracy to our people, local governments must strive to compliment the State government efforts in the areas of construction/maintenance of inner roads, waste management, security of lives and property, primary education/healthcare and so on. We must synergise to deliver a SMART CITY State that works for all.
“Local government is the third tier of the Nigerian Federation with its responsibilities clearly defined in the constitution. By their position on the ladder of governance structure, local governments are the closest to the grassroots and are therefore expected to provide and facilitate the provision of services that will have direct impact on the lives of the ordinary people”, he stressed.
While reminding the new Chairman of the enormity of the task ahead of her, the Governor said the ceremony was in line with sections 24 and 25 of the Local Government Administration Law of Lagos State Chapter 89, Vol. 8 2015.
He said: “As you assume your new office, let me remind you that the task ahead requires purposeful and result-oriented leadership that will deepen the relevance of local government administration for the benefit of the good people of Ikosi Isheri LCDA.
“Your ascension to this position was made possible by the provision of the law that I have just made reference to.  Given the position you hitherto occupied, as Vice Chairman, it is expected that this transition will be seamless and l urge you to prioritize the completion of ongoing projects going forward.
Sanwo-Olu urged the new Chairman to implement policies and programmes that would have direct positive impact in the lives of the people of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, noting that as the third tier of Government, Local Government Councils are the closest to the citizens and as such, residents should feel their impact more.
“The aggregation of the 20 Local Governments and 37 LCDAs makes up what is known as Lagos State. What this means for me, is that the dream of a Greater Lagos can only be realized with Greater Local Governments.
While thanking Allah for the turn of event, Princess Bada promised to work with the government to deliver a better Ikosi-Isheri to her people.
She said her political relationship with the party and various political leaders in the area will come to bare in the discharge of her duties.
In her words, “this is not my making, it is the will of Allah that today has come and by the His Grace I will work with the Lagos State Government to provide the best for the people of Ikosi-Isheri.
“I have been mentored by great politicians like our distinguished Senator Bayo Osinowo and others to understand politics of service and I will use this knowledge to serve my people.”
Princess Bada was inaugurated as Chairman of Ikosi Isheri LCDA following the demise of the former Chairman, Alhaji Abdulfatai Ayodele Oyesanya on Tuesday 21st January, 2020.

COURT STRUCK OUT MTN SUIT AGAINST AGF

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday struck out a N3bn fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by telecommunications firm, MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, against the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
MTN had filed the suit to challenge an August 20, 2018 letter written to it by the AGF, demanding $2bn in alleged unremitted tax.
But Justice C.J. Aneke struck out the suit on Thursday after being told that the AGF had withdrawn the demand letter from MTN.
Counsel for the AGF, Habibat Ajana, had pointed the judge’s attention to a January 8, 2020 letter by the AGF to MTN, wherein the Chief Law Officer said he had reviewed the issue and had decided to withdraw the demand letter for $2bn tax.
MTN’s lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), said having withdrawn demand letter, his client would drop its suit against the AGF.
Consequently, Justice Aneke struck out the suit.
In the suit, MTN had prayed the court to award N3bn against the AGF for rights infringement.
Olanipekun had argued that in writing the demand letter to MTN, Malami acted beyond his powers and violated the provisions of Section 36 of the constitution on fair hearing with “the purported revenue assets investigation” he carried out on the firm’s activities covering 2007 to 2017.
The court had in May 8, 2019 ruling dismissed AGF’s preliminary objection to the suit.
